The Problem With 'Good Enough'

Wireless connectivity has a hidden problem. Most radios such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and standard UWB were built for average conditions. They work well enough on a bench, in a clean room, in a controlled lab. But put them into the real world, on a body, near other devices, inside a helmet or a headset, and the cracks appear. Latency spikes. Packets drop. Batteries drain. The connection that was supposed to disappear into the background becomes the bottleneck.

That's exactly the problem SPARK was founded to solve.

SPARK Story

In 2016, the researchers founded SPARK Microsystems to commercialize this technology and develop a new class of ultra-low-power wireless transceivers. SPARK has since grown into a fabless semiconductor company focused on delivering the speed, efficiency, and reliability required by real-time connected systems.

Today, SPARK offers a growing portfolio of production-ready chips, supported by an extensive patent portfolio and a Montreal-based team that serves customers across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

SPARK is a fabless semiconductor company based in Montreal, Quebec. We design the chips and modules that make the wireless link work. Founded by wireless researchers and built by semiconductor industry veterans.

SPARK founded

Frédéric Nabki and Dominic Deslandes spin out from UQAM, incorporating SPARK Microsystems in Montreal with support from Axelys technology transfer.

2017

2017

Silicon Catalyst & seed funding

SPARK joins the Silicon Catalyst incubator for semiconductor startups and closes seed financing from Real Ventures and Cycle Momentum.

2018

2018

Nokia Open Innovation Challenge

SPARK wins the Nokia Open Innovation Challenge for its low-power UWB transceiver, recognized for potential to transform wireless connectivity.

2020

2020

SR1000 series launched

First commercial chip family announced — ultra-low power, very low latency, high data rate transceivers targeting AR/VR, gaming, and wireless audio.

CDN $17.5M growth financing

Round led by Cycle Capital with participation from former Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs and former GlobalFoundries CEO Sanjay Jha. Manufacturing scale-up begins.

Second-generation LE-UWB transceiver officially launched. Reaches TRL 9 — actual product proven in production. Third-party GHG impact verified by Oxia Initiative to ISO 14064-2.
